Gynecology Q & A
What is gynecology?
Gynecology is a specialized area of medicine focused on the reproductive and general health needs of women. Dr. Coe can help you manage some of the most important aspects of your health and wellness, including birth control, sexual health, and menopause.
She provides evidence-based, goal-oriented care to women of all ages. Dr. Coe understands the value of developing a strong patient-doctor relationship that fosters communication and trust, and she spends the time necessary getting to know you and your health concerns.
What can I expect during a gynecology exam?
Because of your unique needs, your gynecology exam with Dr. Coe is individualized based on your age, health, and general gynecological concerns and needs. However, you can expect a comprehensive exam, so she can help you reach your health and wellness goals.
Your exam may include:
- Check of vitals
- Review of your medical, sexual, and menstrual history
- Discussion of birth control methods
- Complete physical and pelvic exam
- Breast exam
Depending on your age, risk, and reason for visit, Dr. Coe may also conduct a Pap smear, which is a screening test for cervical cancer. During the test, she gently swabs cells from your cervix and submits it to pathology to look for abnormalities that may indicate risk of cervical cancer.
During your yearly exam, Dr. Coe may also update your vaccinations and recommend other health screenings, such as an STD check, blood work, DEXA scan for bone density, mammogram, or colonoscopy.
What are common gynecological health issues for women?
Although it’s important to see Dr. Coe annually for your well-woman exam, you may also need to see her if you’re experiencing a gynecological health issue. Some of the most common concerns and symptoms women experience that should be evaluated include:
- Heavy, painful or irregular periods
- Abnormal pap smear
- Pelvic pain
- Menopausal symptoms
- Vaginal dryness or irritation
- Breast lump
- Pregnancy and STD prevention
- Infertility
