STI Testing Q & A
What is STI testing?
STI testing refers to the specialized tests offered by Dr. Coe to determine if you’ve contracted an STI. Common STIs include Bacterial Vaginosis (BV), Trichomoniasis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), Syphilis, Herpes, HIV and AIDS, and Hep B. The type of test you need depends on the STI of concern and may be done as a:
- Blood test
- Urinalysis
- Tissue or fluid sample
Dr. Coe determines the most appropriate test for you based on your sexual history, age, and symptoms, if any.
When should I get tested for STIs?
You should get tested for STIs if you’re sexually active. Most STIs don’t cause symptoms and the only way to know if you’ve contracted an STI is to get tested. Although both men and women get STIs, women tend to develop more serious complications, such as infertility, when left untreated.
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common STIs in the U.S., and certain strains of the virus increase a woman’s risk of developing cervical cancer. Dr. Coe can test for the strains of HPV linked to cancer by swabbing cells from your cervix. Dr. Coe also provides the HPV vaccine to protect you from certain strains of HPV.
Good health starts with prevention. Dr. Coe is a women’s health expert who provides STI testing and health screenings to help you maintain health and wellness.
